On other social sites I would get friend requests from men (mostly). When looking at the profile for these people I would run across some who had a ton of 'friends' and all female. My standard response was, "I have no intention of being part of your collection".
Then, just the other day I was watching a news segment and they talked about the same concept. About how some people in social spaces would use the number of friends as a sign of status.
So now my audience is broadened but the concept is the same. Friends on a social site, to me, are people who, if there were no geographic or time constraint barriers, I would love to have coffee with or just invite over for tea to get to know better.
For those of you who will hit the "Add as friend" button on every profile you visit, don't be offended but I'm not a collectable.
