For ten years now, for the feast of St. Nicholas at my husband's Orthodox church, I have baked and decorated two dozen gingerbread St. Nicholas cookies. I first saw the idea for this design in "The Baker's Dozen: A Saint Nicholas Tale" by Aaron Shepard and illustrated by Wendy Edelson in which an honest colonial baker by the name of Von Amsterdam who always gives his customers exactly what they have paid for, no more or less, learns a lesson in giving a little more by an old woman who tells him " Your heart is small and your fist is tight." The old woman might or might not be a visitation of the saint who was venerated for his generosity as for his miracles. In Orthodoxy he is known as Nicholas the Wonderworker.
