I taught my first cake decorating class!

OK, so it was to a bunch of 11 yo's, but I still did it! My dd turned 11 yesterday. She's loves to dabble w/ cake decorating, so we made that the theme of her party. I ordered the Icing Fun kits from Wilton - 10" bag, couple, 3 tips (round, star, leaf). Wilton has a lesson plan to follow but I mainly just winged it.
We started the party by creating bakery labels. I gave each girl a 3x5 label sticker and had crayons/sharpies to use. I just told them to name their company and create their own label. Some were quite creative.
I had enough cupcakes baked so that each girl could make 4 cupcakes to take home...in her own little bakery box w/ her label!
We started the lesson w/ setting up the bag and coupler. That was actually pretty confusing to them! You have to trim the bag to make the coupler fit and some weren't getting the idea at first that it was 2 parts. OK, so they aren't mechanical engineers, they're 11! We got through that, then I had them put their bags away and we used disposable bags. I didn't want to have to clean all of those bags and couplers to send home! Yikes! We did use their tips, so I had to clean them, but that wasn't bad.
I showed them how to do stars, writing, dots and leaves. I had practice boards set up - a printed out sheet in a ziploc bag. Each girl got to color a tub of frosting. That got quite messy! They filled a bag to practice, then the bags just became communal to share the colors.
One problem we did have was w/ the knives/spatulas. It's really tricky to scrape frosting off a flat surface like a plastic bag w/ a non-flat knife! I only have a limited number of icing spatulas so thought that knives would work. Well, they did except for scraping.
The girls then got creative on their cupcakes. Some did a base frosting, so piped directly onto the top. They came up w/ everything from an America flag to fish in the water w/ the sun shining on top to spaghetti and meatballs! There were the requisite flowers and butterflies too.
Al in all, it was an awesome party! Definitely different and definitely related to my daughter's personality and interests!
