Favorite (and one not-so-favorite) childhood food memories in no particular order: 1. Receiving in my Christmas stocking, a wished-for can of smoked oysters—at age three 2. The sound of Julia Child's voice as my mother watched her program in the 1960s 3. Having my grandmother call my bluff by enforcing my agreement to eat for breakfast the cold peas I had left on my plate the night before 4. Walking two blocks to her house for my Saturday morning baking lessons 5. Wednesday suppers at the S & W Cafeteria in Charlotte with my North Carolina Grandma 6. A slice of pecan pie at the Harmony Café in Harmony, NC 7. Going out for pumpkin ice cream at Pat Mitchell's in Endicott, NY 8. Making Danish Christmas cookies with my mother and grandmother (and now also doing it with my kids) 9. Our Danish Christmas dinners of roast goose, rice porridge (with the prize going to the finder of the almond), red cabbage, aeblekaege (apple cake), and more 10.
