A few tips that will save you money on your Wedding Cake;
Always talk to you cake decorator about what do you want and get all the fine details up front.
Have them to give you an estimate.$$$$
Do not order the cake for the exact count, remember not every one eats cake. Believe me you will have cake for every one.
You may ask the cake person to do a simple cake, and then you may add your own decorations. Silk flowers, fresh flowers, ect.
Ask the cake decorator if you can bake your own cake and have her decorated.
Always have some one that knows how to cut your cake at the reception, this way every one can enjoy cake and you will have plenty for all your guest.
You may save your first tier and freez it until your 1st year anuversary, make sure that you wrap it in plstic and then put it in a box, place it in the freezer in a corner that you know no one can move it.
Talk to cake decorators get to know them, there may be one willing to help you the extra mile and give you a good price.
Visit a local culinary class near you, talk to students that may like to practice their skills if you buy the materials, ask them for how long they were taking their classes. Best ones are the interns.
Hope that you find a good deal on your cakes. If you have any questios write to me.
