slight snag in the root beer

Ran into an odd problem. I am supposed to have sassafras root "shavings" for the recipe, and nothing in my kitchen does a very good job of shaving these gnarly roots. I finally started asking my neighbors, and one neighbor offered to slice the roots with his bandsaw into sassafras "chips." That seemed about the right consistency for reducing. The drawback is that I'm reducing the wood from the inside of the root, as well, not just the bark. Oh well. It's all going to get strained out. What's a little bark? Just some extra fiber, right?
