Cupcakes: trial run

Zoe's birthday party is three weeks away. After Holden's birthday, to which no one but Hawk's family showed, I thought "Why am I buying cakes at the store? I love to bake, the cakes taste like crap and for a buck I could make a cake from a box." So for Zoe's party, I decided I would make a cake. Then I found cupcake papers in her party theme and I thought, "People like a choice of cake flavors. I could make a chocolate cake and vanilla cupcakes." With the parties I've had since we've moved to Bumblefuck, I've waited to try new recipes or new ways of doing things until they debut at the party. Things haven't always worked out. Since I wanted to make sure the cupcake recipe was a good one, I thought, "Why not do a trial run?" So I gathered up the ingredients and made them.
Here's the batter:
Then Zoe had to help me pour the batter into the Disney Princess cupcake liners:
She also had to sample the batter:
They baked 18 minutes:
And while they baked, I whipped up some buttercream frosting:
(if you look closely, you can see some bits of butter; they smeared out when I frosted the cupcakes)
Then Zoe and I each had a frosted cupcake as a test:
Then I used my pastry bag to frost them, to see if this frosting would pipe well. It did. In fact, I had leftover frosting.
Zoe said that they smelled good:
Then I sprayed a few of them with some spray-on coloring, to see if I could do it and if I liked the effect. Answer? Yes.
And they are the best cupcakes I have ever had in my life.
