This is one I really want to share because it helps reuse waste from the fishing industry....

I was also told by several people who swear by it, its the greatest for veggies and fruits AND most pot gardens since it replenishes tons of nutrients the plants go through faster in pots.

I am currently using DR Earth... I dosed both the citrus trees, with #9, and the veggies, with #5 before I mulched them... Should last about 30 days before I have to do it again...

K, I just mentioned this in another post, but I'll put it here too. I use the waste from my pond for fertilizer.

I have a small water garden/ koi pond that I use the sludge from each spring and then again in fall. I scoop up the waste from the bottom of the pond with my ginormous leaf net and throw it directly on the flower beds, or, put in a bucket to carry it around to other beds. Turn it into your soil along with other ammendments. I also use the sludge that accumilates in the bottom of my waterfall bio filter when I clean it out. Then again in the fall, when it's time to winterize the pond, I do the pond last, after cleaning up and winterizing the flower/veggie beds. I go ahead and distribute the sludge again and mix it in.

It's a nasty mucky job, but I've seen a vast improvement in the soil in my beds. And hey, it's free!

Oh! also...if I have a sickly plant somewhere during the growing season, I'll water it with pond water...perks it right up

even tho i'm a '"city" girl...I have a compost in my backyard its amazing how it improves plant growth. and it makes me feel better when i put my kitchen cuttings into the compost instead of the trash.

I so want to start a compost pile. or bin. or trashcan. whatever. Can't decide if I will be commited to it or not and then there's the "who's gonna go out and stir the stuff up?" thang.

I have one of those bins that have some holes on the side. All I have to do is make sure I add the right amounts of green and dry stuff, water it and the I have a stick that I use to poke holes in it to airate it. No turning needed and no odor.

really? I thought you had to "layer" stuff, keep turning it, yadda yadda yadda. How much of each thing? (like ratio) (I know, I'm ocd....need specifics on everything, sorry)

I don't remember exactly. I try and do 50/50. But its so easy even this city girl can do it. Actually it was the city that gave then away and had a short class on how to do it.

DD, I will have to tell Danny about using the green sludge from the pond. We just toss it over the hill, no wonder the freakin weeds are growing. We started a compost pile last year. I keep telling him he has to turn it over and I think we should have added some lime to it, not sure about that. Anyway, I keep a little plastic dish on the sink and put all my veggie scraps, coffe grounds, etc, in there and then I have the most lovely bucket on the porch that we empty it in to, eventually it gets carried to the compost pile. The bucket smells nice and ripe in the middle of summer only raw food goes in it or it would attact some nasty creatures. Oh, we also add wet newspaper.
