Karen, if you go to the first page of this thread, Danielle has a template there for you to copy and paste in your post. You can fill out as much or as little of it as you care to. (not necessary, just a guide) |

Well, I've really enjoyed Pinot Grigio...I'm guessing this will probably be my last for the month.
name: Stone Cellars by Beringer
origin: California
price: $5.00
year: 2008
intro: Our Pinot Grigio pops with vibrant pineapple, mango and orange fruit flavors leading to a crisp, smooth finish.
review: very pale in color and "light" in flavor. Dry & slightly sweet. This had a very orangey nose (something I hadn't run into with the other P.G.'s) and a lovely mango finish & aftertaste. This was very easy drinkin'!
buy again: Yes (geez, I'm easy, huh)
pairing: I actually had this with a simple gnocchi & veg dish and it was a perfect match. And guess what...it'd go well with grilled tuna (sick of me saying this about P.G.'s yet?) _________________ http://girlichef.blogspot.com/

Name: CK Mondavi Willow Springs Pinot Grigio
Price: $6.99
Year: 2007
PHOTO of bottle:
Short intro from the wine maker about the wine:
Our Pinot Grigio is a medium-bodied wine filled with aromas of wildflowers, peaches and pears. Fresh, tropical flavors combined with a touch of spice lead to a delightfully crisp finish.
Review: Well... I left my notes at my sister's house. She said she'd mail them to me, but I pretty much remember.
Pale yellow in color
No specific aromas I could pick out.
Me ~ squinchy face... definitely not digging it. Maybe can taste some pear; but I don't like pears either!
Mum ~ she wasn't really digging it either... she definitely prefers Chardonnay.
Casandra ~ nice... she liked it and could even pick out some pear flavor
Would you buy again?: I'd cook with it.
Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes: I just use it for a dry white wine in recipes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Name: Bolla Pinot Grigio
Price: $7.99
Year:2007
PHOTO of bottle:
Short intro from the wine maker about the wine:
Bolla Pinot Grigio is made from handpicked Pinot Grigio grapes from northeastern Italy in Veneto, Fruili and Trentino. Our Pinot Grigio has lively fresh fruit flavors and aromas of peach, melon, pear and lime. Light-bodied and refreshing, this dry Italian wine nicely complements seafood, poultry or light pasta dishes, soups and salads.
Review:
This wine is more golden in color than the Mondavi.
Mum & I liked it better than the Mondavi too...
Even though I liked it better... I still wasn't really digging it.
Casandra liked it less.
We did get a bit of pear flavor.
Would you buy again?: Sounds weird, but even though I liked it better than the Mondavi... I would probably buy the Mondavi before this, just for cooking.
Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes: I have nothing... but there is an Italian Chicken Pasta recipe on the Bolla website you can check out!
We tried these wines with a cheese that was WAY too much cheese for the wines.
Trader Joe's Goat's Milk, Garlic & Herb Gouda Cheese.
Mum and I really LOVED the cheese!! Casandra & Jeannie really HATED it! _________________ ~Marguerite
Kathy - I was all kinds of excited because I had a smoking Loon too, but I think yours is a different vintage than mine.... Either that or they use multiple labels... Hmmmmmm
Name: Smoking Loon
Origin: California
Price$:$11.99 (A little on the high side)
Year:2007
Short intro from the wine maker about the wine:
Oh, there is some nonsense about a loon on the back.... Way too long... Nothing about the wine itself...
Review:
It's pretty good
Color - Golden Delicious Apple colored
Nose - Zested citrus, with some floral.
Palate -Citrusy Pineapples and then Flinty, doesn't seem to have a middle only a beginning and and end. Very cut and dried with very little subtly. Flavor does not linger between tasting notes.
Would you buy again?:
Yeah, while not my favorite, it does have a place with certain dishes. Although I would avoid anything that contains Saffron.
Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes:
This could still go quite well with Linguine alla Olio Aglio e Asperago (Cause asparagus pairs SO well with citrus)
I would not recommend Lemon Pepper Cream sauces, just because I personally do not like flinty wines with cream...
White fish dishes especially with Beurre Blanc or Beurre al'Orange
OK, Last one... Is the Venitian Moon
Name: Venitian Moon
Origin: California; This is a Trader Joe's Brand actually...
Price$:$5.99
Year:2007
Yes, I am showing the picture again... so people don't have to scroll back up...
Short intro from the wine maker about the wine:
Venitian Moon Pinot Grigio is a medium bodies, well-balanced wine. Enticing aromas of fresh citrus fruit and flowers with flavors of juicy grapefruit and spices. Pairs well with a wide variety of foods including salad, seafood, shrimp, chicken, turkey and pasta in light cream sauce.
Review:
II do like this one... There are others I like more, but this is a good solid effort at a reasonable price
Color - Pale yellow (Banana Popcicles from my childhood come to mind)
Nose - Strong citrus, but I don't just smell a general flower smell, it kind of smells like linden blossom or even the flowers of a coffee plant (I know, that is a litt
Palate -Very citrusy, and yes, it's more of a grapefruity type flavor, but to be honest the spices are a little lost on me, I get some "green" but I don't taste "spice" if anything I would say it's a coriander flavor, which is kind of a green citrus with just a hint of pepper, but really not that strong...
Would you buy again?:
Yes, I do actually like this one...
Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes:
Yeah, I was not happy with their suggestions "Shrimp & chicken" is a little cryptic. Like most of the other ones, I can still see this with asparagus dishes, I can even see this making it through a hollandaise. Light cream sauces, yes, that would work... I don't see the turkey thing, turkey is a little too bitter for this wine...
Salads, Big Yes, especially with a citrus based vinaigrette... with a little chili oil kick...  _________________ ~ Shane
Ok.. it's June.. what's the next wine? I'm heading to a Pizza party mid month so I'll be taking some wine with me. Purely for research.
Also.. is anyone missing wine openers from previous wins? |
