Yeah, I always thought it kinda funny that seemingly EVERYWHERE around here carries Barefoot (a Cali wine...Indiana is not that close)! Must be a well-appreciated cellar around here...again, the price. _________________ http://girlichef.blogspot.com/

Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin
California
2006
$9.95
Intro...don't know if you can read that label or not...but mostly it's about how the name Gnarly Head came about...which I LOVE...isn't that a cool name! Basically older vines with fewer grape clusters which produce smaller berries...but those smaller berries are super concentrated. "Rich dark berry flavors from the small grape clusters are balanced with French, American and Hungarian oak, which creates layers of licorice, plum, pepper and vanilla. This luscious combination provides a lingering and spicy finish."
Review: I HAVE FOUND A NEW FAVORITE WINE!!! At least the best one I've had in a long, long time. I've never really ventured into Zin's before now...and this one is awesome (usually a Pinot Noir gal). The color is deep, dark red. It smells of sweet grapes from the vine (like my grapevines "smell") and plums. The first thing I taste is licorice...then deep, ripe berry flavors spattered with pepper! Nice and spicy with smokey/plum-flavored undertones. Definitely can detect the Oak in there somewhere as well. It's dry...and yes, it lingers...but in a most welcome way. I also just realized it's 14/5% alcohol- Wowza! I don't know that I've ever had a wine that high in alcohol content...or that I've ever liked one as much...but this one has me hooked.
Buy again: Oh yeah.
Pairing/recipe: who cares...I'm enjoying it all by its lonesome. But if you really want some ideas...the back of the bottle says it goes well with bbq, pizza, hearty pastas, chilis and ribs. _________________ http://girlichef.blogspot.com/

girlichef: That's interesting, I had the 2007 and was unimpressed. I'm going to have to go back and see if they have a 2006 since it sounds quite different. _________________ Cooking Stuff

Yeah Bob...of course it could just be me But I totally loved it...sadly all gone now. Did you put the '07 up here...must go back and look...memory is a bit shakey (too much wine?). Of course, "they" do say that wines can vary a lot year to year...so I'll have to look for an '07 and see how it compares for me. _________________ http://girlichef.blogspot.com/

girlichef: I think that's one of my favorite things about wine, although it's also the most frustrating, no two bottles are really the same. One year can make a huge difference.
And here is the white zin I tried. My girlfriend actually picked this out, although she didn't like it. Heh.
Name: Beringer
Price: 5.99
Year: 2008
Short intro from the wine maker about the wine: Nothing on the bottle...
Review: Can't put my finger on the smell, other than sweet. Smooth and sweet. Shocking for a white zin, I know. Very fruity, light, tiniest of zings at the end. I can taste white sugar. Seriously. It's not bad, it's just... girly. Wicked girly.
Would you buy again?: Maybe...
Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes: Would be good with fruit, I expect. It was quite good with dark chocolate covered macadamia nuts so I'm guessing chocolate in general would be a good idea. I think I would use this as a mixer, not as a drink-it-by-itself kind of thing. Because wine spritzers are so much more manly. _________________ Cooking Stuff
