If you are thinking its still too early to garden in your area you should consider when you want to start harvesting!?

If you would like some midsummer tomatoes, you should really determine now if tomatoes from seed will work for you, or if you are more in the southern US, you should start thinking about buying started plants.

Zone 7 and Zone 8 the last expected frost dates are from April 12-April 18th! We can actually start moving our indoor seedling out to harden off at this point. (Hardening off a plant is exposing it slowly, for small amounts of time to the outdoor weather and sun. Too much exposure too quickly can fry a plant.)

Its still a great time for Zone's 4-6 to put out cool season veggies... such as lettuce, radish, spinach, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage and fennel. These plants do not mind a few cool nights still to come. 50's - 60's make them flurrish!

Now is slowly coming to the end of tree/shrub planting and pruning. In the south it is shortly past the best time to prune your grapes or fruit trees. They have already started producing sap and can bleed too much at this point. In Zone's 4-6 you may have another week or 2 to do this. If you see buds developing, its too late... wait to do a summer prune of dead or damaged branches, or a fall prune for shaping.

Fertilizing for a spring planting can still be done, the soil turned and compost brought in.

Feels like so much to do right now huh?!

Yeah, I get over whelmed until I'm done... then I get impatient because its still not time to plant!

I'm waiting for my husband to get rid of the weeds (that are so tall I'm embarrassed to say! LOL) so I can get my garden area ready. I'm looking forward to a nice little garden this year. It's been a couple years since I've been able to have one.

When getting started and weeding need to be done here... if its a HUGE project, I borrow my neighbor's tiller. If its not, I get out the stirup hoe and start scrapping the surface. I also do most of my soil prep on the mild days of the winter and fall, I find it nice when it warms up all I need to do is move the straw off of the garden beds, plant and mulch and I'm done!
