We have a 15 pound, 15 year old, sweet little beagle named Sandy. She's very loveable and is always by my side. I know her time is coming, because she's gotten wobbly on her feet, and she's not eating very well. She stopped eating all dog food, and her treats too. Yesterday her diet consisted of Oscar Mayer deli ham and Ritz crackers. Hey, at least she ate something. Today I cooked her a chicken breast and she ate a good portion of that. It's hard to get much of anything in her. She is drinking a lot tho. A customer at my work told me that she got her doggie Spaghettios like her vet told her to do, and that the dog loved them. I forgot to buy them today, so I'll make sure I remember to buy her a can tomorrow. She doesn't seem uncomfortable, just old. Anyone have any other suggestions for her? Thanks in advance!

Ronna, first of all, I am so sorry that your little guy is not feeling well. My SIL used to give her little dog scrambled eggs to entice him to eat. I would think all the salt in the spaghettios might not be good for him.

Hi Ronna, Sorry Sandy isn't feeling well. I agreee with Patti, scrambled eggs are good for animals and so is some oatmeal. You might try her on something like that also! It's always hard to see our fur-babies get old...just like our people loved ones! Good luck!` Debbie

I did try scrambled eggs a few days ago. She ate a little them threw up (not to be graphic). I tried a little oatmeal, she wasn't interested. Tried some bouillon, some broth with rice and chicken She's mostly just drinking water now. I gave her a little yogurt this morning, but she won't eat anything now. I left a message for the vet, and he's going to call me back.
I appreciate the suggestions. I just feel it's her time. She's always been "my" dog, so it's hard.

Hi Ronna... this takes me back to a year ago when I lost my cat Seether. Maybe this is just a bad bump in the road and things are going to improve. I'm really pulling for you and Sandy... I'm very close to my cats.. they are almost my babies. I heard a comment from Tori Spelling once (and I can't believe I'm posting a comment from her here) where she said.

"Before I had kids my dog was my baby & everyone told me after kids I'd realize she's just a dog."

(shot of cute dog.. cute baby and so on)

"But after my baby was born... they were wrong. (something to this effect) Now I have two babies."

Anyhow, I feel the same way. People tell me all the time that after I have kids I'll realize they are only animals... but I doubt it. Dogs and cats will never tell you to go to hell when they are 15! AHHHAH Now that's unconditional love.

My thoughts (and my cats are also wishing you well) are with you! Smile

Thanks for the concern. I talked to the vet yesterday. He told me that they told me about 6 months ago that she tested for kidney disease, but they said so little about it that I barely remembered. Now he says that she has failing kidneys. He told me to boil her some hamburger, and I did. She ate a little yesterday. I worked today, and came home to messes on the rug. My husband won't be home until Monday night, so it was too long for her to be home by herself that long. I cleaned up the messes. She hasn't eaten today, but did drink some water. I walked with her outside and sat on the grass with her. It was a beautiful day. Just typing this is bringing tears to my eyes. I sat with her on the grass, and was petting her, tears in my eyes then too. This is hard. I think she only has a day or two left. I usually don't talk about sad things in my life. Actually my life is pretty happy. But, this is hard. Thanks for the support.

Hello Ronna, I wish There was something I could say that would help you through this. Sandy indeed is very lucky to have you by her side when she's sick. Our fur-babies ae just that our babies....they give us thier lifetime of unconditional love and seem to know when we're down and need a kiss, don't they? I lost a Cocker Spaniel several years ago and every year at Christmas we put his little ornament on the tree and it almost makes me cry. Believe me, no other dog will be able to take little Sandy's place either. I hope she doesn't suffer and I also hope you don't have to make that dreaded decision! Thoughts and prayers are with you and Sandy! Keep us up-dated on her condition! Take care...Debbie

I think it's really odd, and totally unexpected, but Sandy is doing much better! My husband was away for a few days and he came home to be with her a day early. I thought that we would be putting her to sleep within a day or so. As soon as he got home, she ate some for him! That was Sunday, yesterday. He got her to eat and drink some today too, and she seems peppier. Maybe something else was going on besides her kidney disease. I don't know, but it's good to have her back for a while. You just never know how things will go. I'm thankful that her daddy is home. I'll talk to the vet tomorrow. We'll just take it one day at a time.
I feel fortunate to have had this spot on bakespace to express how I've felt. It helped me a lot, and those who responded to me were a real comfort. Thanks so much, and I hope, in the future, that I can be of some comfort to those who need it like I did.
