Not to be sad, but my old doggie isn't doing so well.

Ronna, I was so glad to come home this evening and hear that Sandy seemed to be feeling better. I hope she keeps improving for you and hubby.
I am so glad that in some small way we were able to help you.

Just a quick note to let ya'all know that Sandy is still hanging in there! I thought for sure she would be put to sleep last weekend. She's eating some again, not a lot, but some. And she's drinking. Yesterday she had a little run in her step and that was good to see. We'll just take it one day at a time. Thanks for the concern and the friendships. I'll post again when there's any change.
Hugs,
Ronna

Hi Ronna,

I've been following Sandy's story cause I have a 16 year old dog with a heart murmur that she takes pills for and the pills are causing some kidney failure. She also drinks a ton of water, but has the appetite of a horse still. She is having such a hard time walking and for the first time, fell down two stairs. She is having accidents all over the house, but she seems so happy and my little white dog loves playing with her. My question is when do you know when it's time? For me I know it's not yet, but I just don't know when to let her go. There's no instruction book for these things, you know? Anyway - I've already seen your next post where Sandy is doing better, so I am happy for you. But I'll keep both of you in my prayers.

Prime - that is a good question. For my cat (my first cat who we just put down July 06) it came quick. She went in for a routine check and they said she was dehydrated. Within 24 hours she was gone. Kidney failure which is pretty typical for cats. I was pretty lucky that I went to see her twice in the hospital before the doctors came in and said this was it.. you have to decide. Try to save her or put her to sleep.

Man, I can still feel how terrible that last few minutes felt and how time seemed to stand still but yet there wasn't enough time. For me it was knowing that she was already kinda gone. Her eyes had been fully dilated and they said that's brain damage. However, I really believe she waited for me because she died in my arms.

If you've never had an animal go this way you cannot prepare yourself. No matter how you think you'll handle it, you just can't. What worse is if you've never had an animal die (this was my case). I was shocked (and still am) at how much she added to my life.

Some people might not agree with what I say next... we had found another cat about a month before my cat Seether passed away. At first I was pretty angry at "Gracie" for being in our house because I thought if I had only noticed she wasn't eating or was sleeping all day I would have taken her in sooner. I thought Gracie was the issue. But soon I changed my tune. I can't tell you how lonely the house was without Seether. If I didn't have Gracie I think the house would have been too quiet. I always tell people if they think the end is near, go out and get another animal (doesn't have to be a dog and it can be a fish) but get an animal to help fill the giant void. It will make the transition easier. They won't replace your pet, but it will remind you how much love they can bring you when you're feeling down. Just be prepared.. that new animal (if it's a dog or cat) will miss your pet when the time comes... so you'll need to get a third. This is a vicious cycle... I know..(this will also explain how I got 3 cats) but your heart is big enough for lots of animals. Smile

My thoughts are with you and your dog. I'm pretty sure dogs let you know when it's time... cats now that's another story.

Oh Babette - my little white Beau will be traumatized when Molly goes. My DH says no more pets. But he knows I want a little black pug more than anything! I agree, having another pet really helps. I think watching Beau miss Molly will hurt me the most. Thanks so much!
