OK... so today I was at the door when I saw a dog without a human. In this area it's very rare to see a dog without an owner so you have to investigate.

Going outside helped me confirm there wasn't a human around so I finally got it to come over so I could read it's tag. I called the animal shelter tag.. no one answered. Then I called the security tag company.. .a high tech tag that will help for sure. Not really. They said the number meant he had a chip, but they had no info on the owner.

At this point I had to get the dog inside because I was afraid it would leave and not come back. So I seduced it with cat food - it's all I had. I've never had a dog and boy can a dog get messy. Saliva everywhere.. .drooling. Yuck. But it was a cute dog so I could deal.

I got the dog inside ... mind you I have three cats all trying to figure out what the hell is going on. They are curious, pissed off and too tired to do anything about it. I think they were probably upset that the dog was eating their food.

So I call the animal shelter back - they find the owner's contact info. However the phone is disconnected and the address is an office building on Wilshire 5 miles away. So then I call the number and change the area code thinking.. maybe they didn't update it since we changed 213 to 323. I got an answering machine and left a message.

Everything seemed find until the dog seemed to want to go outside.. .bathroom probably. I've never had a dog so I called a few friends and asked.. what do dogs do when they want to go outside.. no one knew and I determined my friends were useless.

The worst thing I could do was call my BF.. he was like.. WHAT? NO MORE ANIMALS! LET HIM GO OUTSIDE.. HE'LL COME BACK IF HE WANTS FOOD. So I opened the door and let him go out. He went immediately to the bathroom, stopped at the top of the driveway and looked back at me. He's sort of a rottweiler type.. absolutely beautiful. So then he walked off.. I felt terrible. How will he survive on his own.. After I let him out.. my BF called me back and said.. ok, keep him until you find his owners... NOW YOU TELL ME!!!!

AAARRG... I feel kind of bad. I already miss him. Is that weird? Now I hope his owners don't call cause how do I tell them he's gone again? I swear.. one day I'll have a big enough house for all the animals I find.

He looked like he could have been a great pal.

Oh Babette you have such a big heart. I tend to take in strays also, until I find its owner or a new home for it. What else could you have done. I am sure you didn't have a leash, and if you did it would have been cat sized and not much good. Hopefully he found his way home.

Babette, don't feel bad, he was giving you a "thank you" look over his shoulder. He probably was on his way home (trust me, he knows the way) and was just stopping by at a "road side diner" to grab a bite for the rest of the journey! He's grateful, I'm sure of it Smile

You really did all you could do. Funny how you can start to get attached to an animal so quickly. He may come back, but, if not, hopefully he's back at his home. Some things we just never know, but, like I said, you really did your best!
You are a sweet lady. Thanks for the support for my doggie, who, by the way, is doing just great! I'm thinking that maybe I bought a bad can of dog food at the time. After 2 weeks, she's pretty much back to her old self, running and playing. No more dog food, though. I'm cooking chicken, rice and a little vegetables. The only downside to her recovery is that the day will come, and I'll be sad all over again. So....now, I'm thankful for every good day that Sandy is having.

As for my pal... the story turned really strange. The accounting firm called me back the next day and said they know the owners of the dog... I guess the dog runs away a lot. Remind me I should be rich to be able to afford to have someone else take care of my things.. .like dog licenses. Anyhow... They live near me so I bet the dog eventually went home... could you imaging if I took it to the pound... yikes! It was 10 miles away... the owners would have been bummed.

Anyhow, I hope he comes back to visit - it will be funny if he does.

Babette--You sure do have a soft spot in your heart..don't you?? That was a real heart warmer. We have people here where we live that if they see a barn they think they must have barn cats so whats a couple more? You wake up in the morning with kittens running around your front door. Not a good scene when we have dogs that don't like cats. We've had that happen a couple times now and we end up taking them to our neighbor who has a farm and he's always willing to take the drop-offs. It's pretty sad that people have animals and like you said can't take care of them, meaning spade or neuter if you don't want to multiple!! Thanks for listening.

P.s. I forgot to mention.. if you have an animal license.. make sure the city has your current contact info. I would have been able to get the owners on the phone immediately, but after going through hoops because the phone number was wrong was a real issue.

And support the ASPCA! Send money... check up on good tips & get expert advice and put decals on your home to notify firefighters that you have an animal in your home in case of a fire... Smile
