When i was in the 4th grade people would ask if my sister and I were twins{she is 3 1/2 yrs younger than me.] but because she was larger built than me we were about the same size. mom dressed us alike most of the time, too so that didn't help. But get this, she was dark haired and darker complection, and I was blonde and lighter. She would get so mad when they would ask that because she was in the 1st grade and I was in the 4th.LOL she said they must have thought she was really dumb or I was gifted.LOL

I went through that too! I think the worst was when it came from family (since neither my parents nor my inlaws were terribly supportive of breastfeeding past the first few weeks). We took our 6 month old to a boat show (to appease my father in law) and while we were there I needed to feed the baby, so I said I was going to find a quiet place. My mother in law suggested I feed him in the bathroom  I asked her if she wanted to eat her lunch in the bathroom?!? She was pretty quiet about it after that.

Cat - when i was director of corporate amenities at morgan stanley in the mid-late 90's, one of my co workers had just come back from the ladies room and had been using the breast pump in there. i couldn't help but feel bad, and that's just pumping, not feeding. who would want to do that in a public restroom, GAAK.
so, being that the health units were one of the things i ran, we converted one of the "sick rooms" in each building, installed plumbing, seating instead of a cot, etc and made each one a lactation room, as we called it. fortunately that time frame was very financially rewarding for the investment banks so $ was really no object. also, everyone was leaving to go to the dot coms so employee perks for retention was big. that's one little thing i did in my 12 years there but one that i felt really good about.

I didn't breast feed, but whenever I was out with my friends, or they were over at my house, they would always ask if I was comfortable or where they could go do it.....my response was, "where will YOU be most comfortable?" In other words, have at it, the kids gotta eat.
I don't see the big deal, the woman who do, even in public, always seem to be discreet to me, covering with a blanket, towel or whatever. As for the people who walk up and say something, I mean, what the heck? I think I'd probably do the Madonna thing as Joy did LOL
Michele, I used to be the same way....it made me a little uncomfortable, until I became a mom, so maybe it's natural to feel that way until then? I dunno. |

I may feel a little uncomfortable but i would NEVER say anything to anyone. No way.
That's just me though. When my sister was shopping for wedding dresses she was in a room with me my mom, her sister and law and a bridesmaid maybe two and the attendant I don't know why so many of us went but anyway...as she was getting dressed (and I hate when people change in front of me!!) another attendant just walked right in and my sister was half undressed. I yelled at the lady and she ran out of there. I thought that was soo rude! She didn't even ask if she could come in and she wasn't working with us. Ugh! I hate that!!! My family hates how upfront I am though. My sister was a little mad that I yelled at the lady but she laughed later.

Yay Eric! What you did makes me smile - I can't tell you how many women those rooms probably benefitted. I pumped, a lot, since I had two and they were preemies, and it was always tough to find a decent, clean, private location to do that. Fortunately, I lived where I worked (a boarding school campus), so I could go home, but that wasn't always convienent.
Michele - I am REALLY self conscious about my body and about making other people uncomfortable. I think the only people I ever breastfed in front of was Paul, my parents, my inlaws and my best friend. If anyone else was around, I would go to another room. If we were at someone else's house, I would ask to use a bedroom or other room with a door that I could close. I found out even before having kids, that I had to check some of my dignity at the door. We went through a lot of fertility treatments and I delievered at a teaching hospital, so WAY too many people saw all of me. But even now, I'm not so good at getting changed at the gym and I don't like salespeople barging into dressing rooms.
