Did you know that the blueberries you ate on your breakfast cereal might have traveled as many as 1500 miles to get to your bowl? Buying locally grown produce, whether it's from a greenmarket, a farmstand, or a conscientious supermarket, can conserve fuel, reduce pollution, and support your local economy...not to mention, produce grown nearby doesn't require preservatives and waxing to keep it fresh. Likewise, spending the extra money on organic produce will not only keep you from potentially ingesting toxic pesticides, but it's good for the environment. Support organic farmers, and you'll be helping to protect water from pollutants, cut down on soil erosion, and conserve the energy and expense it takes to produce synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Plus, there's no doubt about it-organic and locally grown produce just tastes better.

| I try to shop as much as I can from local farmers. It is so hard to make a living at it and I surely want to keep them around. The article is so right, locally grown things have a far superior flavor. I also grow a few things organically in my garden at home. |

Thanks for the links!
I belong to an organic food co-op so get a huge bin of fruits and veggies in season every other week. We also go to local growers markets.
I even buy my meat from local farmers who use organic practices from another co-op with orders monthly. _________________ Stop and have a cup of coffee in Joan's Country Kitchen |

Hello all you bakers and cakers.
NtxWriter, I have moved to North Texas and am interested in locating some farmers groups to buy from. Can you list a few in the Tarrant county area. I shop at Whole Foods and H.E.B. Central Market already , but am unable to get a ride on a regular basis , and am looking for some grocery delivery services , and want too also locate a farmer who would deliver. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I like having my own eggs. That's why I have 12 spoiled hens and 2 guniea fowl. I just put a dozen guniea eggs in the incubator. We also buy our pork local and have it butchered and buy 1/4 beef from a neighbor. I like to buy from people who are like minded. I raised 20 broilers for our freezer as well.

Hello , Trace 7.
Thank you for the pictures of those fine birds. I have now been here for a year and am looking forward to starting my shopping with a local co-op. This has also inspired me to start the search for a piece of land that I can either lease or purchase . Then , I can raise my own food and livestock. The time to do all this is really a hard thing to find. Welcome to the forums , I do look forward to a foodie , such as yourself , sharing the agricultural side of things with us. Stay warm .

Your welcome Larry!! I hope you get the chance to try your hand at it, even if it's on a small scale. Enjoy the coop. They are great places to shop. I just wish my climate made for a longer farmers market season. _________________ Mise en place |

We have such a short growing season here that locally grown gets pretty tough for most of the year. I buy locally when I can but rely mainly on an organic box out of Washington. The farm I order from grows as much as they can, most of the rest of the produce comes from other pacific northwest growers. It still has to travel quite a ways but at least is isn't from the other side of the country like the food in our grocery store. It also tastes much better _________________ http://www.etsy.com/shop/alaskandermish
