I'm old enough to remember when white wine with spaghetti or red with fish was looked on as such a faux pas, right up there with drinking out of the spit bucket at a wine tasting...well I guess that one is still considered to be a pretty big boner. but the others are no longer thought to be a goof. _________________ Carol

We have a lawyer at our local wine tasting that we always joke about doing that. Never seen him do it, but it WOULD NOT surprise any of us!! LOL _________________ http://JofussGallery.etsy.com

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! All I like is red wine. I guess this new wine club will expand my horizons ... _________________ -Joy

The Cardinal rule, is if you like the wine with something then it's good, if you don't like it, it's bad...
I tend toward a more traditional pallate but I am also not a stickler on this ... as I agree with Michele... I like Red wine with Turkey and pork... and I drink Red Zinfandel with alot of chinese food.
However, I have had some wines with certain foods, and they literally just DONT go together, you would THINK they did, but No... each one makes the other one taste nasty....
I had a delicious Sauvignon Blanc... can't remember the particular name, but it was a little high on the mineral flavors...
Ruined my Prosciutto pasta dish (Papalina) ...
Prosciutto made the wine taste like paint thinner....
Paint thinner made the prosciutto extremely bitter and acrid tasting... at first I thought I might have used a rotten lemon or something...
But after I drank a cup of coffee... I tried them seperately and they were both fine... I opted for a mexican Coke with dinner.... I DID drink the wine later though... _________________ ~ Shane

I don't like wine... but recently I've found that I 'do' like sangria... so I'm just a baby step away. This is a good way for me to gain some experience and maybe stumble on something I do like! _________________ ~Marguerite

"The Cardinal rule, is if you like the wine with something then it's good, if you don't like it, it's bad" This needs to be put on a poster or something.
Sangria rules, I agree. I went to a restaurant once for a family gathering. My brother, his wife, my girlfriend and me all went early and had a couple pitchers of sangria and some light appetizers. For some reason I can't remember the name of the place... _________________ Cooking Stuff

Wine and food parings is something that I really want to learn more about. For those of you like me who are new at it.....here's a good place to start....(this helped me "get" it)
if you have a wine that is just a bit to dry for your taste, try a salty cracker or salty slice of cheese, maybe a gouda, cheddar or rye cheese. Then take another drink of wine and you'll be able to notice more of the fruity or other distinctive flavors (notes) of the wine come through.
If a wine is too sweet, try a slice of fruit or dark chocolate with the wine.
Oh, and I totally agree with the wine/white meat rule being dated. I mix and match all the time (even though I was taught "better" lol) |
