To think, my friends call me a wine snob when I invite them over to eat... no matter if its to eat pasta or hamburger helper, I always pick up some wine... yet I have never ventured into the 'wine club'.

I assumed it was a special group here that was so close knit and been doing it's thing so long that I shouldn't stick my nose in.... but I saw "Merlot" in the title and here my nose be. Very Happy (I, honestly, should have known better at this point with you guys, but the term "club" is a scary term to me, I've had bad experiences so excuse me.)

I did have a glass of merlot each week of my pregnancy starting my second trimester with my daughter. I read wonderful things about it from a european stance.

Now I have some favorites, and one's I am yet to try.

I am going to pick up a fresh bottle of something I have never tried before so I can write a little review here. It sounds like loads of fun!!!!

YAY!!!! More people to Drink wine with!!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!! Laughing

I totally understand about the "Club" thing... Maybe we should change the name to the Wine "Group"

I have always liked "Winos R Us" but I think that moves into Copyright infringement Wink

I had to swing by the bank during lunch which happens to be near a grocery store.. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I picked up a bottle of my Favorite merlot for this evening. To be honest I am not normally a Merlot fan.... I don't hate it by any means, I just usually choose other things. I love the bold Italian Reds... Can't help it... BUT.. I LOVE this particular Merlot.... although I have not had this vintage year yet... I am excited now... !!! Smile

OK Here we Go with the Merlot... HA HA

Name: Clos du Bois
Price: $15.99 (although it was on sale for $12.99)
Year: 2005
Origin: North Coastal California

Short intro from the wine maker about the wine:
An approachable Merlot with red berry characters, hints of mocha and a touch of smoke from toasted barrels. Excellent with Filet Mignon, lasagna or Grilled Pork Chops.

Review:
Color:Deep Dark Purple/Red - Like Chambord
Nose: Slightly smoky, I also smell leather and blackberry (which is kind of odd - I think my nose is off tonight - I am slightly stuffed up
Notes: I do not agree with what is on the back of the bottle in a couple of respects. The wine is initially very timid on the tongue and must be moved around the palate before opening into luscious red fruit, embraced by soft tannins... There is definitely a smoky tobacco quality to the velvet finish. And it IS velvety, but it's a light velvet, not a choking one. The thing that is unclear to me is their reference to "Mocha". I cannot figure out if they are referring to coffee beans FROM Mocha or the Italian Coffee drink of Chocolate and Espresso, also known as a Mocha. Either way, I neither smell nor taste either one of these. Smile I don't get that. But then again, my nose is stuffy, so I may be missing something.

All in all, this is a really good middle of the road Merlot that isn't TOO Merlot-ey. All the pieces are there, they just don't slap you in the face. It's nice and balanced, thus appealing to a larger audience.

Would you buy again?: Yes, though I still have other wines that I prefer that are just as serviceable for the same food applications. This is still a well done "easy" Merlot.

Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes: Filet Mignon, Lasagna (Although I think Nebbiolo plays better), Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Gremolata, Strong Sheep Milk Cheeses, Strawberries.

It's my goto Merlot... It seems to please Merlot lovers as well as those that are more tentative about it (like me) Although I have had some REALLY BIG Merlots that I did like... But I have also had alot of bad ones... Being in Oregon, Merlot it not the local forte... Or at least 12 years ago it wasn't ... Oregon does Pinto Noir really well, but historically the Merlot bites... Laughing literally, VERY tannic.. Chokingly dry... Flat berry flavor...
