So who has planted a fall garden?! Anyone trying to over winter garlic and onions this year? I am getting ready to do that myself here shortly.
I have cabbage, spinach, broccoli, carrots, radish and lettuce going now. We build low tunnels to go over my beds so I can continue to grow this all winter. Does anyone else do low tunnels? Row Covers? Greenhouses?
I would LOVE to see pictures! Come share your fall garden!

I threw in some garlic cloves in my veggie bed...but that's it. I have no idea if it will even work.....just did it because.
I have no time for any other fancy dancy fall/winter gardening LOL Seriously tho, it's baking season, and my back can only take so much! |

lol@ddpie I bake a lot too and with the holiday I will have cookie orders out the rear for sure!
Anyways, gardening this time of year is actually more normal and easier then every... from the south all the way north to Maine! I have some how to's available. The simplest is low row covers, which I do in my raised beds. This is great to grow greens and root plants like carrots and radish. Its a plastic cover over metal, pvc or wood hoops. The plastic is usually that you would use as a cover in a greenhouse. Fairly cheap too!
My husband and I created some last winter and I was growing spinach and lettuce through January which we got several feet of snow for the first time in a long time. Our temps were even in the teens for awhile.
Here;s in Jan. Later I take the plastic off on the warmer days. This plastic is raising the temp in those beds more then 20 degrees above what it is outside. These greens take longer to grow (ex" lettuce normally taking 45 days to grow now may take 60), they are still strong growing, and its said that the frost outside and snow make the flavor even better!
This works at ground level too!
As for the garlic cloves, if they sprout, and you are northern growing... simply cover them with a layer (3"+) of hay or mulch. They should be ready to harvest mid to late June!

Hooray! Fall is the BEST time to plant it! It will grow better in chilly weather then hot. Garlic and onions are known to 'hibernate' during summer months and even in high humidity, so this is the best time for both.
My garlic and onions just came in the mail today. I've got some Elephant garlic and 100 started yellow onion bulbs.

I don't know if I did... I wasn't having a party this year, but I did have one last year I got some suggestions for. Hmmm... Maybe I entertained the idea, I have people try to talk me into all kinds of stuff around here! LOL
I love that idea though, I may just make a couple for my daughter and I to share.
