Why I want to be mentor in this category:
I'm the go-to bartender girl whenever anyone has a party, and my dinners and cook outs are always highlighted by creative drinks. The only downside to that is that I can sometimes get stuck by the blender, instead of in the pool! Guess that's a good reason to put in a pool bar!
What inspires me in this category:
I think nothing compliments a fabulous meal like the perfect beer, or a well chosen glass of wine. Flavorful mixed drinks add fun to any party and can be elegant, festive, or whatever you want them to be. I love that even people that can't bake or cook can always (at least) make a great cocktail.
After lots of years of tending bar, I figured out that the best drinks are the ones I make at home! My sisters are my best taste testers; they love when I come to visit and want to try something new. Pomegranate mojitos anyone?
Biggest Lesson Learned:
Always check the seal on your blender. Nothing is worse than wasting a good margarita on your curtains!
Books, classes, teachers that have helped me:
One of the best bar books I have read is actually the Playboy Bartender's Guide. I know what you're thinking, but it has fantastic recipes, lots of great tips, and is well organized, which is key in a bar guide!
Education, Awards, Pro Experience:
Over 10 years of bartending experience in places ranging from a family owned waterfront restaraunt (lots of pina coladas!) to high end martini lounges (yes, all the gals drank cosmos!).
- Chopped ice makes the best blended drink. Start by chopping ice cubes alone in your blender before adding liquids to make sure you never get a chunk of ice in your drink!
- Keep a wine diary! If you enjoy trying new wines, it's the best way to keep track of your likes and dislikes. Jot down the name, date, your impressions and reviews, maybe even paste in the label. This is great if you are forgetful like me!
