My Smoothie Corner

Why I want to be mentor in this category:
Smoothies in my diet have really helped me maintain and lose weight.

What inspires me in this category:
Smoothies are quick healthy snacks and perfect for someone that does not have alot of time to prepare a meal.

Experience:
Fresh fruits and vegs are the key ingredients to any smoothie.

Biggest Lesson Learned:
Soy milk or almond milk is healthy alternative to using regular milk in your smoothies.

Books, classes, teachers that have helped me:
I actually look in my local fruit and veg stands for my resources and flavors.

My Tips:

  • never place whole fruit, always chop your fruit before blending.
  • for summer smoothies, freeze your fruit before blending
  • want to make smoothie packs? small ziplock bags work perfect. cut up your ingredients, place in your freezer. take out when needed at other ingredients as desired. cuts down on mess and saves time
  • make a simple syrup of mint or lavender to add some wow factor for smoothies using water
  • do not be afraid of using plain yogurt in your smoothies to replace the milk
  • add part of a pack of your favorite instant pudding to your smoothies for a richer flavor.

My Dog Food Corner

Why I want to be mentor in this category:
I am a homemade pet momma. Dogs require the best nutrition to stay in the best fit shape. Why treat your dog with commercial products when you can now give your dog the best in home-made organic fresh treats and dinners, by making them at home yourself.

What inspires me in this category:
It is the best nutrition value I can do for my pets. My westie has allergies (dust mites- but as a troubled tummy) and my golden retriever was extremely ill as a puppy when we got her ( she was missing an antibody). They are both now bouncy and healthy.

Experience:
I make homemade treats for my pets all the time and have done tons of research on the different diets required for different needs of dogs and cats.

Biggest Lesson Learned:
research- have any questions read my blog entry: http://www.bakespace.com/my-kitchen/read-article/1609/

Books, classes, teachers that have helped me:
Loads of cookbooks for dogs especially the holtics and vet approved, my favorite would have to be Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets : The Healthful Alternative by Donald R. Strombeck

Education, Awards, Pro Experience:
I have just done tons and tons of research.

My Tips:

  • always let your vet know you want to switch over to homemade
  • if you are using eggs, use the shell too!
  • dogs love carrots and they make perfect alternatives to pressed rawhide bones
  • remember the rule 40/30/30- 40% meat/30% veg/30% starches
  • freeze your dog food- it makes it easier to follow the rule of 3
  • go by the rule of 3, make sure thawed food is not in the fridge more than 3 days
  • always cook your meat- some raw food can cause toxicity in dogs
  • there are foods that are NOT safe for you pets- ALWAYS make sure you know what they are.
  • never feed table scraps- that is NOT a balance diet for your pet
  • for portion control on your pets, the small gladware 1/2 and 1 cup containers come in handy to place in the freezer
  • vegetarian? no problem, dogs LOVE tofu!
