INGREDIENTS

  • 1 recipe for yeast doughnuts (the one I used is below)
  • Alternatively, you could use biscuit dough I suppose
  • red raspberry jam for filling (or any gooey filling really)
  • icing and/or glazes
  • corn syrup and red food dye

DIRECTIONS

Make yeast dough and let rise. For the brains, I rolled out a large rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Use a pizza roller cutter to cut long thin strips. Now just wiggle the strips around until they resemble a brain. Just keep in mind that it will rise again on the second rise and then again when you fry it. So don't make it gigantic or anything at first lol.

I made slits at the top and bottom of my brains. And a deep impression with the back of a knife down the middle. (not too deep mind you) Carefully place on a floured tray or board and cover with a towel to let rise a second time.

For the eyeballs, I just rolled out a thick circle and using a cookie cutter, cut rounds then shaped those into balls. Placed on the tray.

Fry your doughnuts according to directions. Some of your brains may untwine, that's the parts I used for the "intestines"...a happy accident LOL

When the doughnuts are cooled a bit, make a little hole at the side and fill with filling if desired and then use glazes to coat them. I mixed red food gel with cornsyrup with just a touch of blue for the "blood", put it in a squeeze bottle and went to town.

Now place on a tray and let your little zombies have at it!

(they will be zombies after all that sugar ya know!)

RECIPE BACKSTORY

The greatest thing is....sssssppppssssst, come closer, it's a secret.....they're filled with raspberry jam. So yeah, it was totally hilarious watching the unsuspecting hubby bite into an eyeball and gooey red stuff come out. Gotta love Halloween!!!
