My friend Mark makes this for us when we study together. It's warm and chocolately and makes up for the fact that we have a big exam coming up!

  • 2 1/2 cups ap flour
  • 1/2c cocoa powder
  • 1t baking soda
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1 1/2 t ground ginger
  • 1 t cinnamon
  • 1/2 t allspice
  • 1/4 ground cloves
  • 1/4 nutmeg
  • 1/4 t ground pepper
  • 12oz semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4c butter at room temp
  • 1 1/4 c sugar
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 c dark molasses
  • 1 c hot water

  • Preheat the oven to 350F
  • Butter and flour a loaf pan
  • Whisk together flour and everything up to (but not including) the choc chips in a med bowl.
  • Beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla on med-high in a large bowl for about 3 min (until light and fluffy). Reduce to medium and add the eggs one at a time.
  • Whisk together the molasses and hot water, then add 1/3 of the flour and 1/3 the molasses/water to the bowl with the butter and sugar.
  • Beat on low until just blended, repeat until all flour and molasses water is added.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Pour in pan.
  • Bake for 55-60 min, until the cake begins to pull away from the sides and is firm to the touch (I poke the deep center with a toothpick to make sure the middle is done).
  • Cool for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from pan.
  • Enjoy!
