My mom would always make me the same cake for my birthday: a yellow box cake with homemade chocolate icing! Since I grew up on this delicious icing, I can hardly tolerate canned icing... I'm just so used to the real thing! :)


  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla


  • Melt butter, sugar, cocoa, and milk in a heavy pot. Stir continuously.
  • Boil of 3-4 minutes until it is at the soft ball stage.
  • Remove, and pour into a stainless steel bowl.
  • Add vanilla.
  • Beat til it thickens.
  • After mixing all ingredients, put it in the freezer for a few hours to thicken.
