Christmas Tree Cake
1 81/4-oz. box chocolate cake mix (plus additional ingredients as directed on package)
half a 16-oz. can chocolate frosting
two 12-oz. cans whipped vanilla frosting
assorted gold balls, for garnish (optional)
1 cup shredded coconut (optional
Meanwhile, prepare chocolate cake as directed on package for an 8-inch, 2-layer cake.
Cool layers completely on wire racks before frosting.
Place 1 cake layer on a serving plate; spread top with chocolate frosting.
Top with second layer.
Spoon a mound of whipped vanilla frosting onto cake.
Spread frosting generously on top and sides of cake, using the back of a spoon or a small metal spatula to make decorative swirls.
Gently press tree cookies onto sides of cake (store any extra cookies in an airtight container).
Decorate cake with gold balls.
