Why I Love This Recipe

Traditional Slovakian soup served on Christmas Eve


Ingredients You'll Need

1 package of sauerkraut (not the one in can)
Cubed smoked ham
Smoked pork or turkey kielbasa
Spicy sausage - pork or turkey
Garlic
Dry or fresh mushrooms
Whole black pepper
Salt, paprika
Bay leaves
1/2 cup of barley
Sour cream if desired


Directions

Rinse the sauerkraut in cold water, if you want the soup to be less sour


Add to soup pot


Add water


Add ham cubes


Add kielbasa cut into bite pieces


Cut the sausage to about 1 inch size and add to soup


Add garlic


Whole pepper, salt, paprika


Add couple bay leaves


Bring to boil, the lower the heat and simmer for 45-50 minutes. Add 1/2 cup of barley and cook 10 more minutes. Serve with crusty bread.
