Date Cake with Baked-On Topping
1 cup chopped dates (8 oz pkg is a little more than a cup)
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 1/2 tsp soda
3/4 cup butter (1 1/2 sticks)
1 cup sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
3/4 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
2 cups chocolate chips (12 oz pkg)
1/3 cup sugar
Mix dates, boiling water, and first amount of soda. Let cool.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Generously grease a 9 X 13 inch cake pan.
Cream butter and sugar in large bowl.
Add cooled date mixture, then eggs. Beat to combine.
Add flour, remaining soda, and salt. Mix well.
Pour into prepared pan.
Sprinkle the topping ingredients evenly over the batter.
Bake 45 minutes.
