Fudge Squares

This is an old recipe often found at local get-togethers. For those who love their sweets sweet!

CATEGORIES

INGREDIENTS

  • Base:
  • 1/2-cup margarine
  • 1-cup brown sugar
  • 1-egg
  • 1-t vanilla
  • 1-cup flour
  • 1-t baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4-cup walnuts (optional)
  • Top:
  • 4-T butter
  • 1-cup brown sugar
  • 1/4-cup milk
  • 1-cup icing sugar
  • 1-t vanilla

DIRECTIONS

Base:

Cream margarine and brown sugar.

Add egg and vanilla, then mix.

Add the flour, baking powder, salt and walnuts, and mix well.

Place in a greased 9x9 pan and bake at preheated 350F for 20-25 minutes.

Cool.

Top:

Mix butter, sugar and milk.

Let boil 3-4 minutes over moderate heat.

Briefly cool, then add icing sugar and vanilla, and stir smooth.

Place over base, and cut when firm.

Notes:

This recipe cannot be doubled.

If the fudge is too cool, it will be too hard to spread. I like to use an 8x8 and make thicker squares.
