Why I Love This Recipe


Ingredients You'll Need

2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening (Crisco)
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 eggs
1/2 c. molasses
Dried Apple Icing


Directions

Sift flour and measure.


Sift again with baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda and salt.


Mix together shortening and sugar with 2 tablespoons buttermilk.


Add eggs and mix well.


Add molasses.


Add dry ingredients and remaining buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture.


Bake in 2 (9-inch) layer cake pans in moderate oven (350 degrees) for 30 minutes.


Split layers of cooled cake to make 4 layers.


Spread apples between layers, on top and around all 4 layers like icing.


Let cake set overnight so that the moisture from the apples can be absorbed by the cake
