Ghirardelli Square Cake
1 cup Ghiraredelli Ground Chocolate
2 1/4 cups sifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups milk
Sift together ground chocolate, flour, baking powder and salt.
Cream butter with sugar.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
Blend in vanilla. Add sifted ingredients to creamed mixture, alternately with milk.
Mix until all ingredients are thoroughly blended.
Pour into 2 eight inch square prepared cake pans.
Bake in 350F oven for 35 minutes or minutes or until done.
Frost with Fluffy Pink Frosting and sprinkle with crushed peppermint sticks.
Fluffy Pink Frosting:Blend together 1lb. powdered sugar and 1/3 cup shortening.
Slowly add 1/2 cup milk; beat until light and fluffy.
Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and a few drops red food coloring.

". . . an old fashioned chocolate cake inspired by the Square for which it is named". I came across this recipe when I visited Ghirardelli Square a long time ago. I omitted the pink frosting and made chocolate icing instead.
