Match the color of the sugar to the occasion

Ingredients You'll Need

2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups shortening
4 eggs
4 tsp water
4 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
4 cups quick-cooking oats
2 cups chopped raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts
Additional granulated sugar or colored sugar


In a large mixing bowl, cream the sugar and shortening

until light and fluffy

Add the eggs, one at a time

Beat well after each addition

Beat in the water

Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and the salt

Add to the creamed mixture

Mix well

Stir in the oats, raisins, and walnuts

On a surface sprinkled with additional sugar or colored sugar, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.

Cut out with desired cookie cutters

Place 2 inches apart onto greased baking sheets

Bake at 350 F for 12-15 minutes or until set

Remove to wire racks to cool.
