After a vacation in Hawaii, I became hooked on this island speciality!


  • 1-2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup celery, chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • optional - caramelized onions, cooked egg and sauce or gravy


  • Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until moist but not too soft
  • Form into round patties
  • Cook patties in oiled pan with caramelized onions until well done
  • Transfer meat on top of steamed rice
  • Layer caramelized onions on top of patty
  • If desired, add your choice of cooked egg on top - scrambles, over easy, etc
  • Drizzle choice of sauce on top - teriyaki, beef gravy, etc
