Kay's Dad's Jule Kage
1/4 c. sugar
3 1/2 c. flour
1/3 c. shortening
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. milk powder
1 c. water (fairly warm)
2 oz. yeast (I use cake yeast)
1 1/2 - 2 c. diced fruit and raisins (You know that candied fruit people buy for making fruit cake? Not the citron, the fruit? That's the stuff we use!)
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
Mix all together and knead well. Let rise 'til doubled in size. Then divide dough into 2 equal pieces. Shape into round loaves and place on parchment paper lined baking sheet. Score tops so they don't crack during. Cover and let rise again. Bake at 350º for 20 - 25 min. or 'til bread tests done! Remove to wire rack to cool.
At this point, you can wash the loaves with sugar mixture -
2 parts white Karo syrup to 1 part water. Bring to boil. Wash slightly cooled bread. Syrup will keep in frig. for quite a long time if sealed tightly.
Or you can wait until the loaves have cooled and then frost with a powdered sugar icing like you would for a bundt cake!! Top with maraschino cherry!!
