I wanted to try lentils but wasn't sure how to make them so I asked my dad, the vegetarian. He said to me:

  • "Boil the lentils in a pot with water for about 20mins. The water should cover the lentils about an inch above. Then I add some tomatoes, cumin, onion and garlic powder, sometimes I put in a bit of oregano and some cayenne pepper. I let it cook on low for another 20mins or so. You can determine how dry or watery you want them to be by adding water or letting the water absorb into the lentils."

DIRECTIONS

When I tried to make this I didn't add tomatoes. I added diced potatoes and carrots. I also substituted the onion and garlic powder for fresh chopped onion and garlic (one onion and 3 cloves of garlic). I added curry, corriander, lots of cayenne pepper and only a bit of cumin as well as salt and pepper to taste. I was impressed with myself when I ate these lentils with spiced yogurt and pita bread.
