Why I Love This Recipe

My mom taught me to make & bake these yumatola cookies when I was about three. I remember standing on a chair at the kitchen table, pushing my fingers into the blue can of Crisco, scooping out some of the white fluffy stuff and licking my fingers. Yuch! I think I started crying as hard as my mom was laughing. She explained "that's why we don't eat the dough, silly". Patience. That's just one of the lessons my mom taught me. We baked these cookies often and gave them as gifts whenever a family member, a friend or a neighbor was having a tough day ... we brought them to pot-luck dinners, football games, even gave them away to grateful trick-or-treaters on Halloween. I think my mama got this recipe from her father, Frank Lanning, who owned a bakery in San Marino, California in 1940's. I pass it on here ... for you all to make, bake and share as far and wide as your imagination and resources will allow.
