German Sweet Chocolate Cake (Mary Lust)

Serves | Prep Time | Cook Time 30-40 minutes


1 pkg German Sweet chocolate (4 oz)
½ C boiling water
1 C butter
2 C sugar
4 egg yolks, unbeaten
1 tsp vanilla
2-½ C sifted cake flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 C buttermilk
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Frosting & Filling:
1 C evaporated milk
1 C sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla
1-1/3 C coconut
1 C chopped nuts


Melt chocolate in boiling water.

Mix and Cool.

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

Add yolks, one at a time, and beat well after each.

Add melted chocolate and vanilla.

Mix well.

Sift together flour, salt and soda.

Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating until smooth after each addition.

Fold in beaten egg whites.

Pour into three 8" or two 9" round layer pans lined on bottom with paper.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.


Frost tops only.

Frosting & Filling:

Combine and cook evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla, stirring until thickened (about 12 minutes).

Add coconut and chopped nuts.

Beat until thick enough to spread.
