MELT-IN-YOUR-MOUTH CRUMB TOPPED GRANNY SMITH DUTCH APPLE PIE

Ingredients

  • CRUMB TOPPING:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats
  • PIE:
  • 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 dash nutmeg
  • 6 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced

Directions

  • Combine the four crumb topping ingredients; set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, vanilla, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
  • Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the apples. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
  • Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven on center rack. Remove pie from oven and reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Top with reserved crumb mixture. Resume baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

Notes

This recipe is an adaptation of the best parts of two other apple pie recipes I've come across. It's won a few local pie contests and it's become a family favorite, especially served warm with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream on those cold winter nights!
