RECIPE BACKSTORY

This recipe was given to my mom by a church friend who SWORE it was "the" professional frosting recipe used by the makers of specialty wedding cakes. Whether or not that's true, it's still a family favorite -- airy and smooth, soft, not too sweet, great for decorating and tastes great even days later. You can use butter in place of Crisco (I'm not a Crisco fan), but your batter will be cream-colored instead of pure white, a factor that may matter if you are adding food coloring. Also, I prefer almond to vanilla flavoring (the color won't be affected).
