INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Tbsp Butter (do not use margarine or tub butter)
  • 1- 10oz Pkg. Regular marshmallows (about 4 C miniature marshmallows)
  • Gel or Liquid Food coloring, if desired
  • 6 C Rice Crispy Cereal (or Wheaties)

DIRECTIONS

In a microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 2 minutes. Heat at 30 sec intervals until melted, stirring in between. Stir until smooth.

Add in desired food coloring if using for bushes, trees or ivy. (it's easier to color them now, then to try to paint them afterwards)

Add in dry cereal, use a spatula to coat well.

Lightly butter (or wet) hands to shape cereal into structure. You can also place mixture in a bowl and set on a heating pad to keep warm and pliable while using.

For the ivy on the gingerbread house, I used Wheaties and pressed it on while mixture was warm.

For cake type sculptures, I recommend that you use rice krispies cereal. Roughly form shape, compacting it as much as possible. Allow to air dry overnight, then carve into desired shape using a fine serrated knife, or pumpkin carving saw.

To cover with fondant, apply a really thin coat of buttercream to sculptured piece, only enough to fill in any gaps. Then immediately cover with fondant and smooth with hands. Allow fondant to dry overnight before painting.

RECIPE BACKSTORY

For use with making trees, bushes, ivy, for gingerbread houses etc. For this spooky Haunted gingerbread house, I used Wheaties brand cereal for the ivy on the house and the bushes. I tinted the marshmallow mixture green before adding in the cereal. For making larger pine trees, like for a Christmas gingerbread house for example, you can press the mixture onto a sugar (ice cream) cone. You can also use this mixture to make rice krispie treat sculptures, for use with your fondant cake projects.
