Why I Love This Recipe
This recipe should yield a soft, warm garlicky bread stick with a slightly crisp outer crust. They are delicious dipped in marinara sauce, cheese, or flavored oil.
Ingredients You'll Need
1 cup + 2 Tbsp Hot Water
1 1/2 tsp Yeast
1 tsp Sugar + 2 Tbsp for later
3 - 3 1/4 cup Bread Flour (AP Flour may be substituted)
Optional: 1 tsp garlic powder and 1 tsp Italian Seasoning
1 3/4 tsp Salt
3 Tbsp Melted Butter or oil
1/4 cup Butter, melted
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Italian Seasoning
Parmesan Cheese for sprinkling
Add warm water, yeast and 1 tsp sugar to a bowl and lightly stir. Allow to rest for 8-10 minutes. The yeast should get foamy.
Add additional 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 1/2 cups flour, salt, optional seasonings, and melted butter (or oil). Mix, to combine.
Mix in remaining 1 1/2 cups flour and knead mixture for 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. While kneading, add remaining 1/4 cup of flour if dough is too sticky.
Transfer dough to a large, greased bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Allow to rest in a warm place until double in size (about 1 to 1 1/2 hours).
Once risen, flatten the dough into a rough rectangle and divide it into 12 equal parts. Roll each piece of dough into a rope and transfer to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour.
Bake bread sticks at 425 degrees F for 10-12 minutes.
While bread sticks are baking, mix the topping. Mix the melted butter, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning together. Brush butter mixture over the tops of the hot, cooked bread sticks. Sprinkle them with Parmesan Cheese and return them to the oven for another minute or two until golden brown. When they come out, brush them once more with the butter mixture. If they don't get golden brown to your liking, you can give them a very quick boost under the broiler.
Serve warm. Store airtight or freeze.
