Sourdough Donuts

Worth the wait, these donuts make a delicious special treat for a snow day or any other morning you have a little extra time.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • for rolling:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

DIRECTIONS

Mix starter, eggs, buttermilk and melted butter in a large bowl. Whisk together dry ingredients and then stir into the wet ingredients just until blended. The dough should be thick but loose enough to drop from a spoon. In a deep saucepan, heat canola oil to 325 F. Scoop out dough with a cookie scoop and drop gently into the oil. Fry 6 or 7 at a time until medium brown and cooked through. Transfer to a towel to drain and roll in cinnamon sugar as soon as they are cool enough to handle.


Makes 28 tangerine sized donuts
