Spicy Spam Musubi

This is a very traditional Hawaiian snack food - and I love to make it with the new spicy spam that has come out - Tabasco and Spam - a match made in hog heaven!

CATEGORIES

INGREDIENTS

  • Cooking Time: 10
  • Servings: 6
  • Preparation Time: 5
  • 3 cups cooked rice
  • 1/2 can spicy spam
  • 3 sheets nori
  • 1 T soy sauce
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 T mirin

DIRECTIONS

Slice spam lengthwise in about 1/4" pieces. (should give 6 pieces)

Fry in pan until crispy on both sides.

Add soy sauce, sugar, and mirin to pan - lower heat to simmer and mixture becomes syrupy

If you have musubi maker, put in nori, then add a layer of rice, layer spam, then later rice on top.

Wrap nori over rice and press out of mold.

If you don't have a mold, no worries, take a piece of saran wrap, cut piece of nori in half ,put nori on it, spread layer of rice about 2" by 4" (size of piece of spam) layer spam on top, then cover with another layer of rice, and wrap with nori - it should stick from the heat of the rice, but if not, put a small dab of water and it will stick.

Wrap with saran wrap - these are best eaten fresh, but you can put them in the fridge and reheat on medium in the microwave when you are ready to eat them later.
