TAVERN MIX RECIPE FROM IDA GROVE HIGH SCHOOL

  • Cooking Time: 40 minutes
  • Servings: 12 servings
  • Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds hamburger
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 T. vinegar
  • 1 t. prepared mustard
  • 1 t. chili powder
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1 T. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. catsup or to taste

Directions

  • Brown hamburger and onion until redness of meat is gone. Pour off grease! (That was underlined on the school typed recipe!) add remaining ingredients and simmer about 30 minutes. Serve on buns with a side of dill pickles.

Notes

"Taverns" are what some locals call "sloppy joes" and were on our school menu at least 2-3 times a month. When parents needed to bring tavern mix for a fund raiser, like a wrestling tournament, they were to bring the school recipe.
