Gooey Butter Cake is a wonderful St. Louis treat and having grown up in the St. Louis area, I never knew it was local to the area. It wasn’t until I moved away and went to the grocery store only to find that I couldn’t buy a gooey butter cake, that I started making it for myself. It is a really easy recipe which is good for me and the kids can help too

  • Cake:
  • (1)18 ounce (+/-) package of yellow cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 8 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • Filling:
  • (1)8 ounce package of cream cheese, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 8 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • (1)16 ounce box of powdered sugar

  • Cake:
  • 1.Preheat oven to 350 deg F
  • 2.Combine the cake mix, egg and butter and mix well with an electric mixer.
  • 3.Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13x9 inch baking pan.
  • Filling:
  • 4.In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
  • 5.Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter and beat together.
  • 6.Add the powdered sugar and mix well.
  • 7.Spread filling over cake batter.
  • 8.Bake for 45 minutes.
  • 9.Make sure not to over bake as the center should be a little gooey.
