Delicious Swiss Steak
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoons oil
  • 1 1/2 pound round steak, 1 inch thick
  • 1 medium onion, sliced thin
  • 3 carrots, shredded, or sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups canned tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • salt, to taste
  1. Mix together mustard, flour and salt. Pound dry mixture into steak covering both sides. (I use the side of a salad plate to pound the seasoning in, of course you can use a meat mallet, if you have one.) Brown on both sides in two tablespoons oil. Place meat in a glass baking dish. Cover meat with onions, tomatoes and carrots. Sprinkle with Worcestershire sauce, salt and brown sugar over all. Bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours.
My husbands Grandmother made this dish often and we all loved it. We like to serve it with rice underneath to catch all the wonderful sauce, we would hate to waste a drop!
