Joanne's Slab Apple Cake (Like a pie)

  • crust:
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 3 T. sugar
  • 1 t. baking powder
  • 1 c. soft shortening
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 8 T. water
  • filling:
  • 14-16 tart apples
  • 2 T. flour
  • 1 1/2 -2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 t. cinnamon
  • 2 T. butter
  • 2 T. lemon juice
  • Powdered Sugar Glaze:
  • 2 c. powdered sugar
  • 1 t. softened butter/margarine
  • 4 t. warm water
DIRECTIONS
  1. Mix dry ingredients until well blended.
  2. Cut shortening into flour mixture.
  3. In separate bowl mix egg yolks and water.
  4. Add to flour mixture and mix until dough forms a ball.
  5. Form two balls and roll out.
  6. Place one layer in jelly pan for bottom layer.
  7. Pare, quarter and core apples.
  8. Arrange on bottom crust.
  9. Blend flour and sugar and cinnamon.
  10. Sprinkle over apples.
  11. Dot with butter and lemon juice.
  12. Put upper crust on and pinch edges together.
  13. Put slice marks in top.
  14. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
  15. Ice cooled cake.
