Lebanese Mashed Potato and Ground Beef Casserole

INGREDIENTS
  • 4 large potatoes, boiled
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • FILLING:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon all spice
  • 2 tablespoons pomegranite syrup
  • TOPPING:
  • Bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
DIRECTIONS
  1. Mash potatoes with butter, salt, and milk.
  2. Set aside.
  3. Heat olive oil, cook onion until soft, add beef, pine nuts, salt, all spice and cook until meat is no longer pink.
  4. When the meat is thoroughly cooked, add pomegranite syrup and mix well.
  5. Turn off heat and set aside.
  6. Spread 1/2 of potato mixture in bottom of a well greased pan.
  7. Spread filling over.
  8. Spread remaing potato mixture over filling. Smooth out so that the beef filling is a completely covered by top layer of potato mixture.
  9. Add small pieces of butter.
  10. Sprinkle with bread crumbs.
  11. Bake at 250 degrees for 25 minutes.
  12. Cut in squares to serve.
