Cooking for a Cure
Their vision and ours is a world without Alzheimer's.
We lost both of our parents to this devastating disease and the Alzheimer's Association was there for us. Now we're doing our part to help them continue to support those with Alzheimer's, their families and their caregivers. And, most of all, we want to help them find a cure!
Now a little about our cookbook...we've gathered recipes from employees of the Alzheimer's Assoctiation, volunteers and friends and family who know the effects of this disease. Many of the recipes are dishes that we grew up with, others are quick and easy for today's busy families.
We've also added videos with information about Alzheimer's and the Fort Worth Walk to End Alzheimer's, as well as, photos of fundraisers, walks and the faces of Alzheimer's.

Loretta's King Ranch Chicken Casserole
Submitted by: Loretta GraffThis delicious recipe was given to our mom by her dear friend, Loretta. It's a quick and easy recipe and, served with a salad, makes a great family meal or a special meal for guests.
Cheeseburger Soup
Talk about comfort food! It's currently our very favorite soup and goes great with a loaf of jalapeno cheese bread from the grocery store. We always look forward to this meal!Crockpot Low Carb Spicy Chicken Soup
Submitted by: BrisarWe found this great low carb recipe on Pinterest. It's a a very tasty way to eat a low carb meal and to get your vegetables for the day. We lightened it a little by using Light Velvetta, light cream cheese and fat free half and half instead of the heavy cream. Even with these changes it was rich and delicious!
Mom's Famous Earthquake Cake
My mom made this cake for many years. It was one of her top requests for birthdays, pot lucks and just about any occasion. It's moist and rich and easy to make. You're going to love it!Hawaiian Wedding Cake
One of my Mom's favorite cakes! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown" Image: This is a picture of our beautiful mom who we lost to Alzheimer's August 4, 2013.Cordelia's Pound Cake
I receive this recipe over 20 years ago from a coworker. This is one of the easiest cakes to make and you can change it by adding different types of fruit or pouring a sauce over over the cake. Submitted by: "Cindy Leslie"Kelly's Spicy Sausage Balls
Submitted by: Kelly BrownMy husband, Kelly, loves to cook and he likes to take a standard recipe and kick it up a notch. That's exactly what he did to come up with this great recipe for Sausage Balls. I could make a meal out of these things!
Texas Armadillo Eggs
This makes a great appetizer or finger food for any gathering! It's kind of like a sausage ball wrapped around a stuffed jalapeno. Yum! Pure Texas! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Spicy Avocado Chicken Enchiladas
To make these spicy, leave the seeds in the Serrano pepper and use a medium Salsa Verde. For the milder version, remove the seeds and use mild Salsa Verde. Although this recipe has quite a few ingredients, it's not difficult and it is definitely worth the effort! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Beef with Brocolli
This is an easy version of the classic Chinese take out. The recipe calls for flank steak, but we use whatever steak is on special. We serve it over brown rice and spice it up with a little Sriracha. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown" The picture attached to this recipe was painted by our mom, in the Alzheimer's Associations "Memories in the Making" program. The Alzheimers Association - North Central Texas Chapter celebrates five years of Memories in the Making, an art program for people with dementia that brings the joy of creative self-expression to residents of area dementia care communities. The enigmatic watercolor paintings by MIM artists communicate, in the subtle and nuanced language of art, a sense of self that transcends memory loss. The delightful images offer a window onto world beyond memory, words and rational thought.Mary Jo's Amazing Lemon Poke Cake
Every Sunday my mother-in-law, Mary Jo Kurosky, would make a Sunday meal for the the whole family. Most of her specialties were never written down...she just created them on the spot. Fortunately, this lemon cake recipe was one of the few that was actually written out and I want to share it. It's one of my favorite cakes and she always made it, with love, for my birthday. This is one of the moistest, most delicious cakes you'll ever eat! Submitted by: "Linda Kurosky"Mom's Homemade Enchilada Sauce
My mother would make a huge pan of enchiladas. Each tortilla was dipped in this sauce before stuffing and rolling. She liked to decorate the top with sliced pimento stuffed olives, onions and bell peppers. The pan would hold 20-24 rolled tortillas. I still have the pan and think of her often. Submitted by: "Jeanie Zinke"Linda's Summertime Watermelon & Cucumber Salad
Years ago there was a little tea room in the back of an antique store in the Handley area of Fort Worth. One of the items on the menu was Watermelon & Cucumber Salad. That sounded like an odd combination to me...so I just had to try it! Absolutely Delicious! While this isn't the same recipe as the one in that little tea room, it's a pretty close second! Perfect for a hot summer day, it's very cool and refreshing! Submitted by: "Linda Kurosky"Easy Ground Beef Stroganoff
This was one of my son's favorite meals. He always added additional sour cream to his plate. I often prepared garlic toast and green beans with this meal. Submitted by: "Jeanie Zinke"Miss Jean's Cheesy Vegetable Casserole
This is my beautiful sister in-law Jean Blackstone's recipe. I first had it while visiting her at her home in Tennessee, since then it has become a regular for us at family dinners. Submitted by: "Billie Webb" Image: Alzheimer's Association - North Central Texas Chapter employess holding a bake sale as their fundraiser.Old Fashioned Gingerbread
My grandmother made wonderful gingerbread. As young people often do, I assumed she would always be here to make it for us so I never bothered to write down her recipe. After she passed away, I searched quite a while for a recipe before I found one that came close to hers...this is it. Submitted by: "Billie Webb"Caramelized Peaches
Got this recipe from Central Market a few years back. It has become a go to for something delicious but still quick and easy. Submitted by: "Billie Webb"Piney Flats Broccoli and Cauliflower Salad

This recipe came from the Durkee Cookbook. I've had this book for at least 20 years. Very good for brunch. Most anything taste better with fried onions. Submitted by: "Cindy Leslie"Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
Our mom used to make this dish on the stove and it was wonderful! For convenience, I started making it in the slow cooker and it's just as good...maybe even better! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Au Gratin Vegetable Casserole
This is a good dish if your cooking for a large group. I'm not a big fan of Swiss cheese but I was determined to follow this recipe to a T. Turns out it's one of the best vegetable dishes I've ever made. Give Swiss a chance. Submitted by: "Cindy Leslie"Loretta's Wild Rice Harvest Casserole
Loretta was a great cook and that's why we have several of her recipes in our cookbook. She and her husband were also close friends with my mom and dad for many years. I knew our cookbook wouldn't be complete without this recipe. The spices and cashews in this recipe makes it stand above all other chicken and rice casseroles! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Quick and Easy Chicken Alfredo Roll Ups
My daughter oftens makes this dish for her family and the kids LOVE it! If my grandkids love it, it must be great. Give it a try! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"BLT Chopped Salad
I'm so into chopped salads these days! When you want something light for dinner, this salad is perfect. We serve it with our favorite jalapeno cheese bread from the grocery store and it makes a good and filling meal. Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Confetti Bean Salad
This salad tastes great and makes the perfect side to most meals. We take it to pot lucks and it's gone in a flash! It's also great as a dip for tortilla chips! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Scalloped Corn Casserole
While browsing some of Mom's old church cookbooks, I ran across this recipe and decided I have to share it! I love Corn Casserole. Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Chili Cheese Frito Salad
Anything with Fritos in it HAS to be good! Perfect for potlucks and as a side dish to a great Mexican meal! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Baked Squash Casserole
I love baked squash casserole and I can't wait to try this recipe! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Southern Cornbread Layered Salad
Such a wonderful salad that's great for potlucks, family dinners and as a side to a great Tex-Mex meal. Don't let the cornbread scare you. It makes the salad! Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Karen's Cheesy, Slow Cooker Party Dip
Yummy, cheesy dip...perfect for a crowd! This also makes a great sauce for enchiladas, chicken or tamales! This recipe makes a lot, but can easily be cut in half for a smaller group. Submitted by: "Karen Murphy"Broccoli, Raisin Salad
I love this stuff! It's full of foods that are good for your brain, which makes it a perfect fit in our cookbook. Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Applesauce Cake
This recipe is from my mom's recipe box.She received the recipe from her longtime friend Linnie Churchill. It's one of the easiest cakes to bake. **The picture with this recipe is our Dad. It can't get much easier than this recipe! You simply dump all of the ingredients in the crockpot and let it cook slowly for hours. You can either use a jar of store bought pesto, or make your own using Our "Oliva's House Pesto" recipe. Submitted by: "Kathleen Brown"Sharon's Blue cheese Dip

Cooking for a Cure was created in honor of our mom and dad, Melvin (Les) and Reba Leslie, with proceeds benefitting The Alzheimer's Association - North Central Texas Chapter. They are a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization who relies on our donations. Their vision and ours is a world without Alzheimer's.
