Flan
"This is my Abuela Elidia's recipe. We all love the flan we grew up with, of course, but none will compare to this one for me. It is creamy but has a firm texture, more like cheesecake than pudding. And I don't care what anyone says--if eggs and milk are breakfast foods, then so is flan!" -Dr. Diana FormosoTotilla Espanola
La Tortilla Espanola (Spanish Omelette) has been a staple for my husband's Spanish-side of the family for years. My children and I love it and my 13-year-old daughter and I decided we would try to make it this summer. We added our own American twist by replacing the sliced onions with the Ore-Ida hash browns. Everything was going great until it was time to flip the tortilla. That's when disaster struck! Our new stainless steel skillet did not cooperate and was in no way non-stick....we nearly lost half the tortilla during the flip. We were able to perform some cosmetic repairs while cooking the underside after the disastrous flip and it ended up looking okay. Regardless, the taste was great! My daughter created a YouTube video of our tortilla adventure: https://youtu.be/h4c9pngNfX4" -Dr. Barbara Garcia-LavinGuandules
"Dominican guandules guisado are a staple for the holidays or when you need a heavy meal on a rainy day (comfort food!). A great addition to the christmas dishes with pork and tostones." -Maria L.Tourtiere
"This is a family recipe passed down from generation to generation. My family would make batches of 8 meat pies at a time; it was an entire day of baking for the holidays." -Dr. Paula BrochuHabichuelas
"This is my mother's recipe for Traditional Puerto Rican habichuelas. It always reminds me of going to visit my family in Puerto Rico, because they eat this with almost every meal!." - Carolina RosadoArroz Non Pollo
"I grew up eating arroz con pollo, but became vegetarian while I was in graduate school. Finding this easy-to-make comforting vegetarian adaptation of the recipe made me so happy. Now my husband and two little vegetarian boys love it too. While my parents don't love it as much as the 'real thing,' they enjoy it as well." - Jessica M. ValenzuelaLefse
"Growing up, every fall my grandfather, aunts, and uncles would prepare lefse leading into the holiday season. They are labor intensive, and essentially a soft potato tortilla, and were served at each subsequent holiday!" - Emily Georgia SalivarRed Snapper in a Bag
"We eat this once a week with the fish that is available in the market and the veggies we have in the kitchen. My kids help me, and always ask for white rice as a side!" -Omilys M.Pebre
"This appetizer is called Pebre. It is like the Chilean version of a pico de gallo. It is commonly served with Chilean empanadas." - Eugenia HernandezCreamy Carrot and Pumpkin Soup
"Perfect comfort food for the rainy weather during June to December in Trinidad" - Sitara RambarranCaribbean Eggnog
"This is the Caribbean version of eggnog and is a staple around Christmas time in Caribbean households" - Sitara RambarranChicken Enchiladas
"Although my family is Cuban, I went to school in Arizona and my favorite food is Mexican food (shhh!), especially chicken enchiladas (green). I love cooking Mexican food, especially for company, and so have served this dish to many friends over the years. It reminds me of the wonderful friends I made in grad school in Arizona over dishes like this one and the new friends I made in South Florida in the years since..." -Dr. Diana FormosoHummus
"Originating from Palestine, this Arab dish is enjoyed by people from all over the world! I can confidently say that a meal in my home is never served without hummus as an appetizer, side dish, or a snack. It is so versatile and in my opinion, tastes best when made by my mama!" -Sally K.Fattoush
"I grew up eating this Mediterranean salad! Every summer since I was a kid, I would go visit my family in Syria and this was my favorite thing to eat there. The vegetables overseas are so fresh and it was always fun picking them with my grandma from her backyard. Enjoy!" -Sally K.Aliyah's Easy Pasta Salad
"Very easy and simple to make! One of the first things I would make as a child. Goes along great with any dish!" - Aliyah Al-karimGranny's Neat Sweet Potatoes
" Note: Grandma did not use a recipe so this is based on our memory so adjustments may need to be made. " - Aliyah Al-karimA&D’s Creamy Banana Pudding
"Growing up, this was something that I enjoyed making with my mom. We would make it very often and the entire family would love it. We did not really add bananas because we don’t like them as much so we tend to call it “cookie pudding”. Hope you enjoy!!!! " - Aliyah Al-karimHaitian Macaroni Au Gratin with Lobster
"A friend of mine taught me this recipe a few Thanksgivings ago and it has been a favorite of mine ever since, with or without lobster!" - Keion W.Brown Stew Chicken
