Arepa (Spanish pronunciation: [aˈɾepa]) is a type of food made of corn dough, originating from the northern region of South America in pre-Columbian times, and is notable in the cuisines of Colombia and Venezuela.
This is a continual battle between Venezuelans and Colombians. Each country claim it as their own typical dish. Arepas are not sandwiches, tortillas, gorditas or tamales, they are just Arepas. You can fill them in with whatever you want to, chicken, meat, turkey, cheese, avocado, guacamole, black beans. If you are a beginner, cheese and butter it’s a good way to start and then, once you are in love with the flavor you can use your imagination and make your own combination of different tastes. If you go to Venezuela or meet a Venezuelan, and you are offered an Arepa, it means you are important to that person and are welcome either to their family or it’s the start of a new friendship. You can find the dough at HEB, Target, Fiesta.
